Your Questions About Ford Tractors

John asks…

I am putting a toggle switch in place of key start on my ford 3000 tractor..is this the best option?

Doug answers:

Two of the above posters almost have it.

You have three ways to do this. You can use 2 switches and a relay.
1 single pole double throw, and one Push to activate self resetting. And a relay so the swithches wont fail due to power over flow through them.

The other way is a specialty switch and a relay, The specialty switch is off in down position, on in middle position, and when pressed up self resets to the on position.

The third and final way to do this, is to visit your local Ford dealership’s parts counter. You would be surprised to find out that most parts for anything with a ford name can be purchased there, including new key switches for tractors.

52(ish) ford tractor won’t start?

52 ford tractor was running in august. tried to start it recently, it turns over fine…but doesn’t kick off. plenty of gas in the tank. there was some dirt in the cleaner, but i dumped it out. i put a voltmeter from the battery side of the coil to ground and got 4 to 5 volts. i put the meter on the distributor side of the coil (while cranking) and get this….the engine seemed to start kicking. does this mean the coil is shot?

Doug answers:

Try some fresh gas or carb cleaner in the carb to prime it, if not, install new points and set the gap about 0.025 -0.030in..

Another trick is to run a jumper wire from the +battery to the + side coil just while cranking to get a hotter spark, but if left to long can burn the points…

Ford 8n Tractor Spares and the Ferguson 3 Point System

Many growers may be familiar with the story of the Ferguson 3 position hook-up system that enabled assorted implements to be connected on to tractors. The Ford N Series tractors first introduced the Ferguson System in 1939, along with the release of the 9N tractor. The 9N Ford tractor was superceded in 1941 by way of the 2N, that also included the Ferguson Systems. In 1947, the 8N Ford Tractor appeared together with the latest features of prior models, and Ford ditched the brand Ferguson on the hook-up, even though they persisted to use it. This resulted in compensation to Ferguson of ten million dollars  through the resulting lawsuit.

Additional variations in the 8N Ford Tractor could be that the half dozen lugs attached to back wheels increased to 8 l as well as the “Ford” brand being fitted to the bonnet and fenders. Yet another variation was the paint job, which had been Ford mid grey on the 9N and 2N tractors, but became Ford medium grey fenders and hood, with Vermillion Red body castings on the 8N Ford Tractor. The 8N was indeed produced until 1952, which makes it a vintage tractor that has become well-liked by hobbyists. Locating 8N Ford Tractor components is simpler than a few other models of vintage tractor components.

An additional important difference between the 8N as well as the alternative versions was the addition of the Dearborn implements, which actually gave producers a massive amount of implements to choose between, that went from 14 to 25 various attachments which could be hooked up to the flexible 8N Ford tractors, which made them a lot more capable than past versions.

As these were a well known farm tractor, they have furthermore turned into a well-liked hobbyist tractor. You’ll find far more 8N Ford Tractors in the classic collector’s tractors than almost every other Ford tractor, though past versions would be worth significantly more, from their sentimental point of view.

To most easily distinguish the Ford tractor, the serial number will precede the model so if you can read it, you ought to identify 8N12345, for instance. Because many Ford tractor accessories are exchangeable, you could have a a mix of both, so the serial number is a good identifying brand, other than the lug layout, that will be the 8 lug layout which happened along with the product change from 2N to 8N. It is possible for an 8N tractor to have 9N motors and vice versa, which means you might have to make use of the two indicators to discover the exact product along with what 8N Ford Tractor components you actually need.

This suggests it is important to establish you really own an 8N motor, whatever the body chassis is. However, even though you possess an 8N engine does not mean you possess an 8N tractor. This variance makes a difference depending on the precise 8N Ford Tractor components you want, nevertheless , you can find them easily on the web.
