Well you found where to put diesel and water. The hydraulic filler cap is similar and usually sits on a tube which goes to the hydraulic tank. Look for black hoses coming from the tank

From your description it sounds like this is the type where you have to step on the clutch before you engage the lever? The PTO then only runs with the clutch out? If that is the case then I suspect something is worn or out of adjustment. If you did not have to use the clutch then it could be the clutch for the pto.

The best way to identify a tractor is by the serial number. Serial numbers on the 9N-2N and 8N tractors are located on the left side of the engine block, just below the head and behind the oil filter.

A little old for me , but I would say that removing the fuel filter(s) and filling them first, then locate the fuel pump and see if it has a small 1″ round knob that will unscrew (left) and pull up slowly, That should be a primer pump, several pumps untill you feel resistance should do it. Any rear end gear fluid will work they are all pretty much the same . Just make sure you get a heavy duty gear oil.

The last issue I saw is for sale online is for 1981. I assume there just wasn’t enough people buying them or subscribing to them anymore. It was probably a niche market to begin with and because it catered to the rural community when corporations and large companies started buying up farms from families that could no longer afford to keep them and making them into these mega farms, there just wasn’t the same amount of people buying the almanacs any more. The decline of periodicals is most evident today with subscriptions that are down across most publications that come out on any scheduled basis. It’s sad, but with the digital age and the written word in it’s classic printed form is just not as popular as it once was.

If you can get it free get it. Now the pto issue, im guessing its going to have a clutch and the linkage to it are bad. Far as i know the pto on that was straight thru,meaning when engaged took power directly off motor crankshaft.could have a bad shifter on it, inside the tranny. My guess if when you engage it and dont hear a grinding then youve got a bad linkage setup easy. If it goes in and pops out or grinds, bigger problems.remember ptos usually have a clutch like a car and sometimes the linkage is exteral and if bent wont release the clutch.
Tractors are expensive. Be prepared, get some lube, sorry been there done that.btw just cause a pto wont engage running dont mean you cant shut it off and as the engine slows to a stop, shove it in gear and restart.

Never use any sealer on any head gasket on any engine diesel or gas never on fords like 3900 series if your replacing the gasket you better have the head checked for warpage most of them need milling

It should be put on dry .
If you are having trouble with the gasket moving before you can get it in place we sometimes use to use a dab of grease on either end so it would stay .
The gasket is what seals the head you don’t need sealant .
The heads are too hot for sealant and give you a false sense of doing the job right until it starts to leak.
